Meet Subaru’s New EV Model: The Solterra

Adventure SUV automaker Subaru recently released sneak peek photos of its first all-electric vehicle, the Solterra. Not to be confused with sultanas which are white seedless grapes (golden raisins) used in baking. This model will be coming to market sometime late 2022, while sultanas may be purchased at your local grocer’s.

According to a Subaru press release, “The next generation of Subaru SUV capability has a name: Solterra. The 2023 Subaru Solterra, which was named by combining the Latin words for “Sun” and “Earth,” is built on the e-Subaru Global Platform, a new all-electric vehicle architecture. This EV brings the Subaru brand’s trusted reliability, state-of-the-art safety technology, and legendary all-wheel-drive engineering to an environmentally responsible all-electric SUV. The Subaru Solterra electric SUV – the natural evolution of Subaru all-weather, all-road performance – is scheduled to go on sale in 2022.”

Subaru Solterra Interior

Revealing information on the new EV’s interior, Subaru says, “Our most technologically advanced Subaru yet. Solterra is quiet, spacious and comfortable equipped with all the cabin technology you need for a modern SUV.” From what GreenCars may deduce from the sneak peek photos, the new vehicle will look a lot like the upcoming Toyota bZ4X concept EV. This is no great surprise as Toyota and Subaru are working together to move toward the all-electric future.

Both the sultana, er, I mean Solterra and the bZ4X will be built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform. In fact, both all-electric SUVs appear to be nearly identical. The Solterra appears to be a rebadged bZ4X with minor trim modifications and wheel designs.

The Subaru Built for Adventure

Subaru concludes its current information by telling us that, “the versatile and capable Solterra is built from Subaru SUV DNA, including legendary Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and plenty of ground clearance.” While the automaker may lay claim to a superior all-wheel-drive system than offered in any gasoline-powered vehicle thanks to its symmetrical link design, only time and a proper road test, will tell.
