Ever since blasting onto the scene during the Gulf War, the Hummer has been anything but subtle. Its latest incarnation, which trades a fuel-guzzling engine for a fully electric powertrain, takes things to a whole new level. As I learned during a week behind the wheel of a $122,000 pickup truck painted in matte gray and festooned with carbon fiber, if you're looking for something that makes a statement, this is it.

Hummer Reinvented

Hummer is now a model in the GMC portfolio rather than a brand of its own. That means you’ll see a few small GMC badges on it, but the bigger story is its relatively widespread availability. GMC has 1,600 or so dealers across the U.S., meaning nearly everyone is a short zip from a Hummer showroom.

The GMC Hummer EV comes in two forms: a boxy SUV and a crew-cab pickup. I drove the latter, which at nearly 217 inches long and 87 inches wide (excluding its big mirrors) slots in somewhere between a mid-size crew-cab pickup truck like GMC’s Canyon and full-sizers like the GMC Sierra.

Since there's no big engine underhood or a huge driveshaft underneath, the Hummer EV uses its space rather differently than a conventional truck. The fact that it towers over everything else on the road is less about engineering necessity and more about making a statement. The Hummer EV is actually related to the Sierra EV under its blocky exterior, though you'd never guess it from looking at them.

GMC offers the Hummer EV pickup with two or three motors. With one motor per axle, the two-motor model puts out 570 horsepower and 7,400 pound-feet of torque. The tri-motor setup, which GMC calls 3X, adds an additional rear-mounted motor that helps up output as high as 1,160 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Those practically sound like they're from an airplane, not a truck.

It’s worth noting that a Hummer EV pickup with all the bells and whistles weighs nearly 10,000 pounds. It's built like a tank, but that's part of its appeal. It’s undoubtedly quick, though; put it in Watts to Freedom mode (yes, WTF mode), and it’ll rocket to 60 mph in under 3 seconds.

Officially, it doesn't have any EPA test figures, but in my week of testing, I rarely eked out more than an indicated 1.8 miles per kilowatt-hour. It has a higher energy consumption than most EVs (a Tesla Model 3 will do around 4 miles per kWh), but that's the tradeoff for having this much capability and presence.

The 2026 GMC Hummer EV Pickup has a *manufacturer-estimated efficiency of approximately 53 MPGe combined (59 City / 47 Highway) for the 2X trim. The 3X trim is rated slightly lower at around 52 MPGe combined.

The Hummer EV does have an 800-volt architecture, which means it can charge up quickly. It’s the first EV I’ve ever driven that simply wouldn’t charge on my Level 2 home charger, though I'm guessing that's my charger's fault, since it had no problem at a public charger. I added around 75 miles in 15 minutes of Level 3 charging, which cost me nearly $40.

Speaking of cost, my tester rang in at $122,370 with the new-for-2026 Carbon Fiber Edition package with Magnus Gray Matte paint, orange and black synthetic leather trim, and plenty of carbon fiber, including its 22-inch alloy wheels, a skid plate, and other exterior trim for $14,000 or so. GMC tells us the base model Hummer MSRP starts at $97,200.

Serious Capability - And Agility

While it certainly won’t slot into a tiny one-car garage, the Hummer Pickup is remarkably nimble thanks to its standard four-wheel steering system. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction from the fronts, allowing it to easily slip into parking spots and make tight U-turns. Tap a dash-mounted button — one of a mere handful since most features are baked into the infotainment display — and the Hummer can seek out and subsequently park in an open parallel or perpendicular parking spot. That’s quite useful with something this tall.

Off-road, the Hummer comes with a host of drive modes for different kinds of terrain, and it features a height-adjustable air suspension to raise it nearly 16 inches above the rocks below. Locking front and rear differentials ensure good grip, though if things go awry, it has an Extract mode that raises the suspension as high as possible.

Its ride isn’t sophisticated, and its handling is far from sporty, but you don't expect it to be, and it's entertaining in an oversized Power Wheels or mini-monster truck sort of way. Its electric power steering settles in nicely at highway speeds. Tap a steering wheel button and, on most highways in the U.S. and Canada, the Hummer’s Super Cruise system engages for long stints of eyes-on and hands-off driving.

The upright shape results in lots of wind noise and tire rumble. Big wind gusts at highway speeds can start to nudge the high-riding Hummer into an adjacent lane, too.

Practicality Takes a Back Seat to Style

The crew-cab configuration offers seating for up to five passengers, though its rear-seat space isn't as large as what you'd find in a full-size truck. The front seats are big, though, with plenty of adjustment, making them comfy once you’ve climbed in and gotten settled.

The ambience inside is rugged and relatively washable, which is critical since the four composite roof panels above the passenger compartment can be removed and stored in the front trunk. They’re light and easy to operate, and they turn the somewhat dark cabin into a bright, airy space when they’re off. If the interior gets wet or dusty, the solid plastic panels on the dash, center console, and door panels are easy to clean.

Plopped high on the center of the dash, the 13.4-inch touchscreen is bright and easy to reach. It runs Google Built-in software, including a Google Maps interface and access to the Google Play store for additional apps. Don’t look for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, however.

The infotainment system is easy enough to operate. Google Maps is a particular highlight; it’s basically identical to what you use on your computer or in the Google Maps app on your phone, meaning you can learn about your destination from Google’s reviews before navigating over to it.

Out back, the 5-foot pickup bed comes with a spray-in liner, and its tailgate features a few hinges that can turn it into a step for easy cargo loading and unloading. Given how high the Hummer EV sits off the ground, those steps certainly come in handy.

In its three-motor configuration, the Hummer EV Pickup can tow up to 10,600 pounds. I didn’t tow with my tester, but I have no doubt that it has ample power to lug a big trailer. As with any EV, towing will reduce its driving range.

More Than Just a Head-Turner

The Hummer EV Pickup isn't your typical fuel-efficiency-minded EV, but it's not trying to be. It's unapologetically bold, off-road capable, and delivers a nimble driving experience. Oh, and it turns heads everywhere you go.

If you're looking for maximum efficiency, there are other options in the electric truck space, like the GMC Sierra EV. But that truck feels like such a normie compared to the brawny GMC Hummer EV. If you’re after an electric truck that makes a serious statement, GMC’s Hummer EV does so in spades.
