The market for electric cars has been topsy-turvy in 2024. While sales growth for EVs has slowed, with new EV sales up about 10 percent year-over-year, compared to growth rates upwards of 30 percent in prior years, many manufacturers are experiencing record EV sales. Indeed, outside of Tesla, almost every brand selling EVs had a great first half of the year – and that’s largely because they were offering amazing lease deals, which helped make EVs more affordable for customers.
Leasing vs Buying an Electric Car
Why lease? Leasing an EV lets you access the $7,500 federal tax incentive regardless of where the vehicle is made or your economic status. It’s also a good way to future-proof yourself: with technology in EVs evolving rapidly, you may not want to lock yourself into a long-term relationship with a new vehicle, knowing that in a couple of years, a better version with faster charging and more range might hit the market. You can simply turn your car back in at the end of the lease, choose something else, and not worry about resale values.
While the deals in July aren’t quite as crazy as in prior months – it will be tough to find sub-$200/month offers now – there are still plenty of great EVs to be had at very affordable monthly payments.
