Kicking Tires on the Mustang Mach-E
Few automobiles have a history or reputation that can come close to the Ford Mustang. The legendary Camaro killer and Firebird fighter has gone through many changes over the years. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced car in the Ford lineup. Over the years the car has gone from a sporty V-8, to the gas-saving Mustang II (1974-1978), to the fire-breathing GT, Mach 1, Boss 429, SVO and Cobra models. But now, seven generations away from the original WWII fighter plane named two-door, there is a new stable of electric stallions bearing the Mustang badge.
Ford labels the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E as “The Future of Exhilaration” and MSRP starts at $42,895 for its Select model, not including up to $7,500 back as a federal tax credit. The various ponies come in rear wheel and all-wheel-drive versions and also offer regular and extended-range batteries. The plucky little SUV crossover has an EPA-Estimated 300 mile range and the mighty GT version boasts zero to 60 times in an earth-shaking 3.5 seconds.
Five Different Models
The First Edition model costs $58,300 MSRP and is a limited edition featuring three exterior colors and unique interior contrast stitching as well as scuff plates, brushed aluminum pedals and red brake calipers for a racy look. The Premium model will set you back a more modest $47,000 MSRP and is said to offer an array of premium technology, luxury and performance. The Premium will do zero to 60 in 4.7 seconds while the First Edition promises 4.8 seconds.
There’s also the California Route 1 model starting as low as $42,300 MSRP that Ford proclaims as its cruise-worthy rear-wheel-drive model with an extended battery to get you an EPA-Estimated 300 miles between charges.
For those interested in capturing the Mustang’s legendary sports car appeal, there is the GT model. You are able to reserve one of these steel stallions now. The GT brings you pure torque-drenched exhilaration and more performance-oriented design details. Ford tells us that the spunky EV earns every inch of its GT badge, whizzing gleefully from zero to 60 in a face-melting three and a half seconds, but this proud pony will take a bigger pull from your wallet with an MSRP of $60,500.
No More Fuzzy Dice
The cars introduce Ford’s Sync 4-A tech that allows drivers to tailor and personalize their driving experience. The system can learn your routines, recommending one-touch shortcuts for things you do regularly. It can remember your commute and update you on traffic and remember multiple personal profiles. You can choose radio presets, cabin climate, driving experiences, ambient lighting, seating positions, and more, all from the onboard touch-screen. In the old days, we just added fuzzy dice to the rearview mirror.
When it comes to charging, these Mach-E’s come with Ford’s Mobile Charger that works on both 120V and 240V outlets for overnight charging. You can also hit the road worry free with access to the FordPass Charging Network; the largest public charging network in North America with over 13,500 locations. When you buy a new Mach-E, you automatically get two years of complimentary access to FordPass including DC fast-charging stations.
Unlike all Mustangs of the past, these new electric ponies have a more bulbous exterior and a hatchback so they look more like an SUV than any Mustang in its sports car family heritage. On the positive side of its egg-shaped styling, the new Mustangs give passengers quite a bit more leg and head room than the 2-plus-2 back seat models of yore.
No doubt this is not your father’s or grandfather’s classic Mustang, but in a dawning age of electric wonders, these Mach-E crossovers are truly great all-around thoroughbreds. In a land of EV upstarts, these horses have proud pedigrees.
