Mazda’s Bold New PHEV Takes Center Stage
This new PHEV can drive nearly 100 miles in electric-only mode, take you 500 miles on a tankful, and offer up looks straight out of a spy novel. The Vision X-Coupe is a bold new plug-in hybrid from Mazda.
The X-Coupe is a four-door “coupe crossover” that’s part of the automaker’s “Kodo Soul of Motion” design based on Japanese minimalism. It reminds us of Mazda’s EZ-6 all-electric midsize sedan that is sold in China and Europe.

A Coupe Crossover With Spy-Movie Style
However, the all-new X-Coupe brings a revolutionary and very powerful plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system to the forefront. A two rotor, turbo-charged gasoline-powered rotary engine is combined with an electric motor and battery pack for maximum range and incredible speed.
The total package brings 500 horsepower to the table, and the X-Coupe can take you 99 miles on electric power alone. When the gas engine kicks in, Mazda says the Vision X-Coupe will take you 497 miles of combined range. The EPA has yet to confirm these figures as of this writing.

CO2 Capture and Microalgae Fuel: Mazda’s Wildest Tech Yet
The PHEV system has a proprietary CO2 capture technology that Mazda says allows the vehicle to contribute to reducing atmospheric CO2 the more it is driven. The automaker tells us the X-Coupe uses a carbon-neutral fuel made from microalgae that combines with the CO2 capture tech to make this happen. Pretty remarkable.
There’s no word yet from Mazda on such details as how big the battery pack is, how fast this stunner will blast you to 60 miles per hour, or if it comes with an ejector seat. But with its long hood, nearly invisible back doors, and sloped rear roof, it definitely looks like a two-door coupe like the classic Jaguar XKR or Aston Martin DB7.
Mazda’s Vision for a Fun, Sustainable Future
Mazda also revealed its puckish Vision X-Compact concept car at the Tokyo Show that is an all-new hot hatch. Mazda says that both cars embody the company’s theme for this year’s exhibition of “The Joy of Driving Fuels a Sustainable Tomorrow.”
