The Fear of Used EV Batteries Isn't Backed by Data
Many people may assume EV batteries will degrade the way smartphone batteries do. We've all had that moment a couple of years into owning an iPhone when you need to carry a charging cable around everywhere, just in case. It's a reasonable fear for people who've never owned an EV — except the data doesn't back it up.

Recurrent, a company that aggregates driving data from tens of thousands of EVs, has been tracking battery health to find out how EVs are actually aging. The company has now observed over a billion miles of driving and charging data from more than 50,000 vehicles, and CEO Scott Case shared what that data shows during his recent appearance on the GreenCars Podcast.
Batteries in three-to five-year-old EVs are, in Case's words, "holding up way better than anybody [...] was expecting." Most EVs in this age range are already on their second or third generation of battery technology, and serious problems are rare. Case noted there may occasionally be an issue, but he pointed out that combustion engines have their occasional issues too.

EPA Range Numbers Don't Tell the Whole Story
Case also shared that EPA range ratings are often wrong, but not in the way you might think.
According to Recurrent's data, many EVs actually beat their EPA range years into ownership. Hyundai and Kia models stand out in particular, consistently delivering more real-world range after three years than the original range estimate promised.
Tesla, however, is known for delivering only around 90 percent of its EPA-rated range at the three-year mark. Case points out that doesn't mean Tesla's batteries have worn down. It just means that automaker's original range estimates were more aggressive to begin with. That gap has been narrowing in recent model years as Tesla gets more conservative with its EPA testing.
Used-EV shoppers should be careful not to just compare original EPA estimates side by side. A Tesla with an original EPA range of 320 miles might deliver around 280 miles three years later, while a Kia EV6 may start lower on paper but hold its range more consistently over time.
The good news is that Recurrent is helping make this data accessible to used-EV shoppers. The company works with car dealers to embed the data from a vehicle's ownership history onto its listing. You'd be able to see the car's real-world range, how that range varies in different weather conditions, how fast it charges, or how much you'd save compared to a gas car.
A Better Way to Measure Charging Speed
Another thing to keep in mind as an EV shopper is that the auto industry typically advertises 20-to-80 percent charging times, but Case says that's one of the least useful metrics out there for buyers.
For one, it's not how most people charge. On a road trip, drivers usually stop long enough for a bathroom break, sometimes starting at a lower state of charge, like at 15 percent, and getting back on the road once they've reached, say, 50 percent, which is often enough to reach their destination. Second, a bigger battery just takes longer to climb from 20 to 80 percent, which can make a car look like it charges slower than it actually does.
Instead, Case suggests the better metric is how fast a vehicle can add 100 miles of range. He said the average model in 2023 takes about 18 minutes to add 100 miles, though many do it in a fraction of that time.
