Volkswagen Promises Affordable EVs
Remember the Volkswagen Polo? It first debuted in 1975 as a mini car sold in both hatchback and sedan versions. Six different generations of the little car appeared through 2018, and soon, VW will debut its all-new ID.Polo electric car.
It’s all part of Volkswagen’s pledge to produce more cost-effective EVs for the world. The German automaker is also tired of just using numbers to name its electric cars. So, the new ID.2 EV that is on the books will now be known as the ID. Polo.
The ID Polo and Hot Hatch ID Polo GTI
VW recently announced that it will produce an exciting new stable of entry-level EVs that it says, “will make electric driving more affordable than ever.” The company says the ID.Polo is just the beginning of this new attitude. In fact, am ID.Cross crossover EV is soon to come as well.
The original gas-powered T-Cross subcompact crossover SUV first showed up in 2019 and was very popular in Europe. However, the ICE versions of the Polo and T-Cross never came to the U.S.
These new all-electric VWs are just the beginning of taking the names of some of the automaker’s ICE models and rethinking them as EVs. And the best part, will be the price. The entry-level ID.Polo is expected to have an MSRP of under $30K. VW’s brand CEO Thomas Schafer says the ID. Polo “is just the beginning.”
“A model like the Polo shows just how powerful a name can be,” says Martin Sanders, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing, and After Sales, “it stands for reliability, personality and history.”
Volkswagen says its new family of EVs will mark the beginning of a bold new era and promises to make electric driving more affordable than ever. But wait… VW plans to make these budget-conscious EVs a blast to drive as well.
Launch Timeline and Market Debut
There will be a hot hatch version of the ID.Polo that will skid into showrooms next year with a GTI variant known as the ID.Polo GTI that Sanders tells us will offer “outstanding dynamics and plenty of driving pleasure.”
The new ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI were showcased to rave reviews at the Munich Motor Show in September along with the electrified ID. Cross SUV. Check out these affordable wonder wagons at your local VW dealer in 2026.
