What is a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a larger rechargeable battery that can be plugged into an external power source. Unlike a conventional hybrid, a PHEV can drive a meaningful distance on electricity alone before the gasoline engine is needed.

Many current PHEVs offer roughly 25 to 60 miles of electric-only range, although the exact figure varies by model. Charging regularly is important if you want to maximize electric driving and fuel savings. For longer trips, the gasoline engine provides additional range without requiring a charging stop.
