A licensed electrician should handle new 240-volt circuits, hardwired Level 2 EV chargers, electrical-panel upgrades, and other permanent electrical work. The electrician should evaluate available panel capacity, circuit sizing, grounding, charger location, and any permits or inspections required by your local authority.

If you are using a portable Level 1 charger on an existing 120-volt outlet, new electrical work may not be necessary, but the outlet and circuit still need to be in good condition and suitable for continuous charging. Before installation, check your EV’s maximum AC charge rate and local utility programs so you do not pay for more charging capacity than the vehicle or home can use.
