Range Rover Took Its Time Going Electric

We're finally getting an electric Range Rover! We've been waiting a long time for this day. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) first announced it a couple of years ago, but production kept getting pushed back. So what's the story behind this long-awaited EV? JLR says it's a "Range Rover first and electric second," and it shows. It looks nearly identical to its gas-powered siblings, just with some noticeable aerodynamic-focused tweaks. You can tell JLR worked hard to keep the same brand DNA intact. Powertrain and Range

The Range Rover Electric pairs two 260-kilowatt motors for a combined 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, which, according to JLR, is more torque than any Range Rover to date. All that power gets it from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. 

Range checks in at 333 miles. Thanks to a 118.5-kilowatt-hour battery and 800-volt architecture, it can DC fast-charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes through its native NACS port, or add 125 miles of range in only 10 minutes.

Notable Tech

It wouldn't be a Range Rover if it compromised on off-road capability, and it's clear JLR tried to deliver on this point. The brand says the Range Rover Electric introduces "no compromise to legendary Range Rover all-terrain drive capability." Backing that up is a traction management system that reacts in as little as 50 milliseconds, which is 100 times faster than an ICE equivalent. It can also wade through up to 35 inches of water. 

While off-road capability isn't new to the Range Rover lineup, single-pedal driving is. And even here, JLR stayed true to the brand's roots. In Single-Pedal Driving mode, the Range Rover Electric can climb slopes up to 45 degrees and pull away on grades as steep as 33 degrees, which JLR says is comparable to a black-diamond ski run. 

One more interesting feature: each Range Rover Electric comes with a Battery Digital Twin that records over 900 diagnostic data points. Since JLR also has over-the-air update capability, it allows for proactive maintenance for owners. 

Pricing and Availability

Range Rovers have never been known for their affordability, and going electric adds a bit more to your tab. Comparing base to base, the gas-powered model starts at $115,750, and the Electric costs nearly $25,000 more.
