Automakers Follow Buyers Back to Hybrids

Since Congress killed the federal EV tax credit about a year ago and the administration later rolled back future fuel-efficiency standards, many automakers have canceled or delayed their EV plans. But consumer demand for more efficient vehicles is still expected, especially with today's fuel prices. So where can those buyers turn? Hybrids. Here are a few new ones on the way.

Audi Brings Hybrid Power Back to Performance Cars

Last week, Audi confirmed that hybrid propulsion is coming to future models at an event showing off its largest vehicle yet, the new Q9 SUV (ironically, not a model getting a hybrid powertrain itself). Audi of America President Vito Paladino told Automotive News, “We will have hybrids in our lineup,” without specifying which models or whether they'd be conventional hybrids or PHEVs.

What we do know is that a new RS5 performance model and the Nuvolari sports car are set to launch in 2027 with plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Sibling brand Volkswagen has promised hybrid powertrains for several models, including the Tiguan and Atlas, when they get mid-cycle updates in a few years. But at that same launch event, Paladino hinted that Audi and VW might not wait that long.

Audi will likely offer a mix of plug-in and non-plug models, much like its competitors. (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Lexus all already offer numerous PHEV and mild-hybrid models across a number of product segments.) The A3, Q3, and Q5 already come as plug-in hybrids in Europe, and several Audi models share a platform with VW models getting non-plug hybrids, so a drop-in solution could arrive sooner rather than later.

Honda Expands Its Hybrid Strategy Upmarket

Honda just teased the next-generation Ridgeline pickup, expected to debut in 2028, which will be among the first vehicles to get the brand's new dual-clutch hybrid system built to handle bigger loads like towing. The next-generation Acura RDX and MDX are expected to be offered with this same system. I drove a prototype last fall in Japan, and it’s very impressive.

Nissan Makes the Rogue Hybrid Drive More Like an EV

Nissan's third-generation e-Power series hybrid will make its North American debut this fall in the new 2027 Rogue. I got a chance to sample it last fall in a European-market Qashqai crossover, and it's one of the most EV-like hybrids yet. The e-Power system will likely find a home in several other models, possibly including the Sentra and Kicks.

Jeep Makes Hybrid Power the Default on the Cherokee

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee launched exclusively as a hybrid a few months ago, and that same powertrain is expected to spread to the next-generation Compass and likely the Chrysler Arrow in 2028.

What This Means for Green Buyers

EVs aren’t disappearing. We'll see more affordable models coming soon, with Slate and Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle platform. But for many buyers between now and 2030, hybrids are shaping up to be the big-volume powertrain.
