America has gone hybrid car crazy in 2026, with automakers refocusing their strategies to offer more and better hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Watch for new PHEV options from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Karma.

Recent changes and highlights include available All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for the Ford Maverick Hybrid, Toyota is expecting strong hybrid sales, focusing on improving driving dynamics with new tech and potentially bringing back the Previa as a PHEV.

Honda is going all-in on hybrid technology with its next generation hybrid systems featuring all-new powertrains and new platforms for mid-size and large vehicles for sale in North America. The company’s goal is to grow its hybrid sales from 800,000 to two million by 2030.

On AWD versions of these new cars, the front axle will be powered by a V6 gasoline engine while the rear gets power from an electric motor. A new energy management control features three independent drive modes: EV Drive for battery only city driving; Hybrid Drive for when the battery energy is low; and a two gear (low and high) Engine Drive for highway running. Honda predicts this new system will improve fuel economy by 30 percent.

Meanwhile, Toyota key releases include the exclusively hybrid 2025 Camry and the new hybrid 4Runner, while also addressing recalls for some hybrid AWD models to protect components. The big news involves the coming launch in 2027 of Toyota’s long-awaited GRGT sports car, aimed at besting Porsche and the Chevy Corvette. Toyota recently patented new hybrid technology that may be used to power the GRGT.

In conclusion, hybrids are becoming this year’s "sweet spot," offering fuel savings and lower entry points than BEVs, with forecasts predicting nearly seventeen percent of new car sales being hybrid in 2026. Exciting times!
