The First All-Electric Maserati

Maserati has just introduced the latest generation of one of its brands icons – the new GranTurismo. A two-door, four-seat coupe with elegant styling and impressive performance, it is the latest chapter in a long line of grand touring Maseratis that started 75 years ago with the A6 1500.

The new GranTurismo coupe combines high-end performance that’s typical of a sports car with space and comfort that make it an ideal long-distance companion, a mix that the brand has always done better than most. Maserati’s grand tourers have always been motivated by large, powerful gasoline engines. But now, drivers have a choice of a conventional powertrain or emissions-free electric power.

As such, the new GranTurismo is taking the storied Italian brand into the future as the first car in Maserati history to adopt a fully-electric powertrain.

Classical Good Looks

From an aesthetic point of view, the new GranTurismo is all Maserati. Its classical proportions include a long hood, a sleek roof line, and a short rear deck. It is a pure shape, built on all all-new architecture that combines lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium with high-strength steel.

The multi-material approach required Maserati to create new manufacturing processes, and resulted in best-in-class weight levels. The new architecture accommodates both a traditional gasoline powertrain, with a twin-turbo V6, automatic transmission, and gas tank, as well as the newly available electric drivetrain.

Three Electric Motors

The electric GranTurismo Folgore adopts a 100% battery-electric powertrain. Maserati’s Folgore system is based on 800-volt technology and has been developed with cutting-edge technical solutions derived from the Formula E racing series. It offers superb performance, made possible by the three powerful 300-kW permanent magnet motors. Two motors are positioned on the rear axle, with the front axle fed by the third motor – so the Folgore is all-wheel drive.

The Folgore’s battery has a capacity of 92.5 kWh and is able to continuously transmit a staggering 760 hp to the wheels. Unlike many EVs, which sit on top of a “skateboard” of batteries, the Maserati’s battery is shaped like a “T-bone” down the middle of the car: instead of placing the battery modules under the seats, they are located in a central tunnel, which results in a considerably lower seating position, without compromising the sporty handling for which Maseratis are known.

Maserati has yet to share EPA range estimates for the new GranTurismo Folgore. In Europe, the company is estimating range will come close to 280 miles.

High-Tech Interior

Inside, the new Maserati GranTurismo’s modern cabin is equipped with a number of innovative systems, including the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) Multimedia system. It integrates the latest infotainment, a comfort display that brings together the main functions in an integrated touchscreen interface, a digital clock, as well as an optional heads-up display.

The GranTurismo also offers an “all-round sound experience.” The company promises a fantastic “engine note,” thanks to work by engineers at its innovation lab. The sound experience is enhanced by an immersive Sonus faber 3D sound system. Designed and made by Italian craftsmen, the audio system offers 19 speakers and 3D sound with an output of up to 1,195 watts, for a huge depth of field and truly unique surround effect.

Made In Italy

Developed at the Maserati Innovation Lab and produced at the Mirafiori manufacturing hub in Turin, the GranTurismo is 100% made in Italy and epitomises “Italian luxury performance”, a concept typical of all Maserati models.
