Nearly every automaker that has vehicles for sale in the United States has an all-electric vehicle in its line-up. That’s not so for Mitsubishi… yet.

You may not know this, but the Japanese carmaker known as Mitsubishi Group (founded by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870) had a successful electric car called the MiEV Colt EV back in 2005. The vehicle was available in Australia and New Zealand in 2009 with a range of 99 miles and a top speed of 81 miles per hour.

The little egg-shaped i-MiEV hit the shores of the United Kingdom and Canada in 2011 and was one of the first battery electric cars on the market. In fact, it was an excellent city car. It was produced until 2020 when the MiEV was discontinued. But as the interest in Global EV sales heats up, the automaker is primed to introduce a new EV line next summer.

Now Mitsubishi is planning to launch a new line of electric vehicles aimed at North America. Based on the all-new 2026 Nissan Leaf, the first of these EV models will transform from a hatchback into a subcompact crossover SUV offering nearly 300 miles of range.

Mitsubishi says the new car will be available in the summer of 2026 and be available at dealer partners nationwide. It will likely feature a single motor for front-wheel drive and come with a Tesla compatible charging port.

High tech features are likely to include an electrochromatic roof panel that can tint itself with the touch of a button. Mitsubishi says it will release a new lineup of electric vehicles, producing a new model every year between 2026 and 2030. The new cars will include a subcompact crossover, an off-road worthy mid-size SUV (similar to the Subaru Outback), and even a sport-oriented family van.

The company has not released the name for its new EV but has registered a number of trademarks including Lancer, Colt, Galant, and Montero. Stay tuned. GreenCars will bring you more info as it becomes available.
