Ford’s Hybrid Mustang: Muscle Meets Electrification

According to the Ford focused news website Ford Authority, the legendary two-door sports car that was made to take on the Chevy Camaro back in the 1960s may be headed to market as a mild hybrid version. Yep, a Hybrid Mustang may be in our future.

Industry sources say that Ford is indeed working on an electrified version of the current seventh generation Mustang codenamed S650E. Over its long history, the pony car has been a stylish convertible, a badass muscle car, and even and all-electric crossover SUV, but with more buyers looking for hybrid cars these days to boost fuel economy and/or performance, Ford is testing the idea of a Hybrid Mustang.

While there are few details at the present time, it is likely that the car will be a mild hybrid configuration offering a gasoline engine married to an electric motor. Unlike the Mustang Mach-E electric vehicle, the hybrid will likely still look and sound like a traditional tire-smoking Mustang.

The current gas-powered ‘Stang is available with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine or a 5-liter V8. Global chief engineer of Mustang Laurie Transou says that Ford will hold onto its V8 engine for as long as it can be sold. But our money is on the EcoBoost mill to power the hybrid adding more power and better fuel economy.

Making a hybrid-powered sports car or even supercar is nothing new. Adding an electric motor or two or three to a powerful gas engine can make incredible power. Check out the Lamborghini Revuelto with its three high density electric motors and a V12 making 1,001 horsepower, capable of taking you from zero to 60mph in 2.6 seconds.

The McLaren Artura has a twin-turbo V6 and axial flux electric motor producing 690 horses, blasting you to 60mph in 3 seconds! Meanwhile, the all-wheel drive Chevy Corvette E-Ray comes with a 6.2-liter V8 and an electric motor at the front axle for a combined 655 hp, hitting 60 mph in a scorching 2.5 seconds.

Okay, so none of those three supercars are built with fuel economy in mind, and who knows, the new Hybrid Mustang may not be focused on saving fuel either. Time will tell and GreenCars is waiting to get our hands on one of these new farout Fords to check it out.

The car is reportedly now in its Technology Prove-Out phase which means Ford is testing the vehicle on American roads in “test mule” form. Whether the popular performance car with an electrical boost makes it to market is anyone’s guess at this point, but with the public turning its attention to hybrid technology, there might just be a Hybrid Mustang in Ford dealerships before you know it. Stay tuned.
