This year’s list includes both domestic and foreign automakers and vehicles that fall into the popular categories of nimble hatchbacks and affordable crossover SUVs.

2022 Nissan Leaf S Plus – 226 miles
The faithful Nissan Leaf has been around for a dozen years already. It was one of the first mass-produced all-electric vehicles in America and offers zero-emission magic for those on a budget. The S Plus trim level includes a 214 horsepower motor and offers the most range in the Leaf line at 226 miles between charges.

2022 Kia Niro EV EX – 239 miles
Smaller Crossover SUVs are all the rage these days and the Kia Niro is the perfect commuter car at an affordable price. The EX trim level gives you four-wheel drive, a 201 horsepower motor and a 64-kWh battery pack for a healthy range of 239 miles between charges.

2022 Hyundai Kona Electric – 258 miles
The all-electric version of the popular Kona Crossover has impressive interior space and cargo room for a subcompact mini-SUV. In fact, room-wise, it is identical to its gasoline-powered version of the Kona. The 201 horsepower motor features all-wheel drive and will take you 258 miles on a single charge.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV 1LT – 259 miles
Chevy all-electric hatchback gets a new look and a $5,500 price cut for 2022. Its 200 horsepower motor puts out 266 pound-feet of torque and will take you 259 miles before you’ll need to plug in. The newly upgraded Bolt has a large 10.2-inch infotainment screen and the latest safety features.

2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro – 260 miles
The roomy new ID.4 is more like an all-electric station wagon than an SUV with lots of room and the very latest entertainment, safety, and driver assist features. The 201 horsepower, rear-wheel drive VW will take you 260 miles on a single charge. An all-wheel drive version is coming soon as well.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium – 300 miles
We picked the Premium trim version of the very quick Mach-E to keep the price point under 50K but it still takes you an amazing 300 miles on a charge and offers all the latest high tech bells and whistles. The California Route 1 Edition will get you 314 miles on a charge but costs $52,775.
