Toyota’s Electrified Turning Point

This has been a big year for Toyota. While sales of all-electric cars in America were less than originally predicted, Toyota’s wide range of vehicles from gas-only, to hybrid and plug-in hybrid, and the bZ electric vehicle has made 2025 a terrific year for sales. In fact, the automaker says that over 50 percent of U.S. sales in 2025 are going to be “electrified” models.

Toyota’s take on electrified vehicles includes all of its hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric vehices, and even hydrogen/electric fuel cell vehicles. Back in 2023, the auto giant’s annual sales report showed that 29 percent of its U.S. sales were what it called electrified vehicles. Then in 2024, the company recognized that 43 percent of U.S. sales were in one way or another, “electrified.”

Now, for 2025, Toyota says that more than half of its car sales in America will be electrified. That’s pretty amazing! In fact, according to recent interviews with Toyota’s vice president and general manager for North America David Christ, he says he believes that hybrid car sales alone will amount to 50 percent of sales in North America this year.

Batteries Made in the USA

The ratio of hybrid vehicles produced for Toyota keeps climbing. In fact, all models of the 2026 RAV4 SUV are hybrid versions and it is one of the most popular and best-selling family movers in the country. The same can be said for Toyota’s top-selling Camry models, which will all be hybrids next year.

Curious why Toyota leans so hard into hybrids as its core “electrified” strategy? This guide breaks down the benefits clearly: Benefits of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

One of the reasons for the increase of hybrid car sales is that Toyota has opened its enormous Greensboro-Randolph Megasite battery plant in North Carolina. It is now supplying American Toyotas with U.S.-made EV batteries, easing supply chain problems and cutting tariff woes.

The company announced a $2.5 billion expansion of the plant to add full EV battery manufacturing capability back in 2022. Now the plant supplies battery packs for Toyota hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric vehicles including the bZ line, its luxury Lexus RZ, and a new three-row electric SUV that is coming next year and built in Kentucky to get around trade restrictions.

All this means that Toyota is planning to cut back on the total output of U.S. gas-only vehicles and step up with more hybrids, PHEVs, and EVs. With over 50 percent of U.S. sales aimed at “electrified vehicles”, we can certainly see why.

When you realize that most U.S. Toyota models offer a hybrid powertrain option, and that top selling vehicles for the automaker include the Prius, RAV4, and Camry midsize sedan hybrid models, Toyota is definitely headed in the right direction.
