Affordable Hybrids Are Having a Moment

In April 2026, AAA recorded the national average gas price at over $4 a gallon - a 28 percent increase from this time last year. If you're worried about gas prices, you're not alone: according to Pew Research Center, about seven in 10 Americans are concerned about rising fuel costs.

At $4 a gallon, the difference between a car that gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg and an EPA-estimated 51 mpg Toyota Camry works out to be nearly $1,000 in annual fuel savings. But you don't have to buy a compact sedan to benefit. Hybrids have come a long way. The five on this list all come in at under $35,000 MSRP, and they cover a truck, a compact sedan, a midsize sedan, and two crossovers. Whatever you're driving today, there's likely a hybrid version of it. Here is our list of the best options.

The Ford Maverick Hybrid with an Airstream on the highway

Ford Maverick Hybrid: $29,990 MSRP

The Ford Maverick is in a league of its own: it's the only hybrid pickup truck available under $35,000 MSRP, and unlike some pickups that add a hybrid powertrain purely for performance, this one actually makes a difference at the pump. The front-wheel drive (FWD) Maverick Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42/35/38 mpg city/highway/combined, and it can save you over $700 in fuel costs compared to the nonhybrid version.

As of 2025, the hybrid powertrain is available with all-wheel drive (AWD), and even with AWD, it still comes in at only $32,210 MSRP. Standard features include six bed tie-downs, Ford's FLEXBED storage system, and towing capacity up to 4,000 pounds with the 4K Tow package ($33,750 equipped). On the tech side, you get a 13.2-inch infotainment system running Ford's SYNC 4 system and driver-assist features like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking.

For buyers who want a truck but are tired of watching the pump tick past $80, the Maverick Hybrid is an excellent choice.

Honda Civic Hybrid: $30,590 MSRP

The Civic Hybrid is one of the more versatile picks on this list. It's available as both a sedan and a hatchback, and both body styles come in under $35,000 ($30,590 MSRP and $31,790 MSRP, respectively). The hatchback gives you significantly more cargo room (24.5 cubic feet versus 14.8 for the sedan), without giving up fuel efficiency. Both get essentially the same gas mileage: the sedan at an EPA-estimated 50/47/49 mpg and the hatchback at an EPA-estimated 50/45/48 mpg. You can save over $450 a year compared to the nonhybrid.

Even the base Civic Hybrid comes well equipped, with a sunroof, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and more.

The Civic Hybrid is great for buyers who want fuel efficiency and the flexibility of extra cargo space without having to step up to an SUV.

The Toyota Rav4 Hybrid in a driveway

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: $33,350 MSRP

The Toyota RAV4 is the bestselling vehicle in America, and for 2026, Toyota made every RAV4 a hybrid - there's no gas-only option anymore. At an EPA-estimated 47/40/43 mpg, the EPA estimates you can save over $600 in annual fuel costs compared to the old nonhybrid version.

The base LE trim starts at $33,350 MSRP, and adding AWD brings it to $34,750 MSRP. It comes equipped with a 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus safety equipment like blind-spot monitoring and Toyota's Safety Sense 4.0 suite.

For first-time hybrid buyers who want reliability, strong resale value, and a great warranty, the RAV4 is a safe bet.

A 2025 blue Hyundai Tucson Hybrid

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid: $34,050 MSRP

The Tucson Hybrid makes a case for itself right out of the gate: AWD comes standard, which actually makes it about $600 cheaper than the AWD RAV4. It's also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the organization's highest honor, meaning it did great in all the crash tests it was subjected to.

Even the base Blue SE trim is well-equipped with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping, and other safety features, plus a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Fuel efficiency sits at an EPA-estimated 38 mpg across the board, and the EPA estimates you'll save over $550 a year in fuel compared to the nonhybrid version.

For buyers who want an SUV with top safety credentials, strong standard features, and built-in AWD, the Tucson Hybrid is a great value.

Red Toyota Camry Hybrid on the road

Toyota Camry Hybrid: $30,495 MSRP

If any car on this list has earned its spot, it's the Camry. Toyota has been building hybrids since the original Prius launched over 30 years ago, and that expertise shows. Every trim now comes standard with a hybrid powertrain; no gas-only version exists anymore. It's also the most fuel-efficient on this list at an EPA-estimated 52/49/51 mpg. And it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ to boot.

Since there's no current nonhybrid Camry to compare it against, using Toyota's last gas-only Camry from 2024, the EPA estimates $700 in annual fuel savings. Almost every Camry comes in at under $35,000 MSRP - the LE, SE, and the blacked-out Nightshade edition - and even the AWD version comes in at $32,020 MSRP. All come standard with blind-spot monitoring, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, wireless phone charging, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For buyers who want maximum efficiency or have long commutes, but don't want to give up creature comforts, the Camry Hybrid is for you.

Save on Fuel Costs Without Compromising

In 2026, it can be rough at the gas pump. Opting for any of these will certainly reduce what you spend on fuel, some by over $500 a year, and the initial price for all of them is under $35,000 MSRP. Whether you need a truck bed, flexible cargo space, AWD, or just a fuel-efficient commuter, there's an option here for you.
