Long known for its innovative automotive technology (remember the rotary engine?) Mazda created an all-electric subcompact crossover for the world called the MX-30. It went on sale in North American back in 2021 but only in the state of California. But the nimble little car was known for its meager EPA estimated 100 miles of range, limiting it to city driving for owners with home and workplace charging.

The stylish little Mazda was acclaimed for its clamshell doors that opened onto a luxury interior and plenty of driver assist tech. Due to slow sales, the Japanese automaker discontinued production in 2023 in favor of developing newer hybrid vehicles, and as it turns out, rethinking the MX-30 concept.

The car did well in other markets of the world and is available as an all-electric or plug-in hybrid car. Mazda has gone back to the drawing board with its first EV and now plans to relaunch the MX-30 in North America, built on a dedicated EV platform, using Mazda’s Skyactiv EV Scalable Architecture, unlike the previous limited-range version.

All New for America

Mazda’s first mass-produced electric car for North America features a 143-horsepower electric motor offering 200 pound feet of torque, powered by a 35.5 kWh battery pack. This second-generation MX-30 is set to go into production in 2027 and be in dealerships by 2028.

The company has remained very secretive regarding its new EV, only saying that the new platform will feature “advanced design, superior convenience, and extended driving range.” That’s good enough for us. We can’t wait to see it.

In other EV-related news, the company has a joint venture going with Chinese state-owned automaker Changan (which means “lasting safely”) and has launched a vehicle to the rest of the world known as the 6e or EZ-6. The bigger picture is that Mazda is investing heavily in electrification, with the goal for EVs to make up a quarter of its global sales by 2030.
