Will Volvo Sell This Midsize SUV in the U.S.?

Those of you with a long memory might recall the Volvo XC70. Originally launched as the V70 Cross Country, the XC70 was a jacked-up station wagon, kind of like a Subaru Outback. Over time, as America’s love for SUVs grew, it was replaced by the XC60. Now, Volvo is teasing a new XC70. Not only does it revive a well-loved nameplate, but it’s a new vehicle concept as well.

Volvo calls the XC70 midsize SUV its first “extended-range plug-in hybrid.” It’s a conventional plug-in hybrid in the sense that it has both a gasoline engine and electric motors to motivate it – either power source can drive the wheels. But a larger battery means that it has an all-electric range of over 120 miles, making it truly a zero-emissions vehicle for most daily driving.

The new XC70 is built on Volvo’s scalable midsize architecture, which the company says will underpin its future plug-in hybrids. Originally designed to meet the demand for longer-range PHEVs in China, the platform accommodates a larger battery and associated power electronics including the equipment needed to fast charge on a Level 3 charger.

Volvo says that the combination of extended EV range and fast charging will let drivers handle almost all daily travel without tailpipe emissions, and the benefit of much lower running and fuel costs, while the small, efficient gasoline engine provides the flexibility needed for longer trips. Long distances can be covered without having to charge, although fast-charging capability means that if you choose to drive emissions-free for longer distances, you can.

Modern Scandinavian Design

The new XC70 leans heavily into Volvo’s Scandinavian heritage, with simple, clean lines and a strong stance. Distinctive lighting and trim are calmly confident and simple, seamless lines flow from front to rear. As always, the typical strong Volvo “shoulder” is present, creating a sense of security and strength.

Thinking about electrification? Learn about the many benefits of electric cars.

Unique features include active grille shutters that only open when needed to cool the engine, staying smoother and more efficient when closed. You’ll find signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED lighting that adjusts intelligently to traffic situations, and C-shaped tail lamps at the rear, like the EX30 and EX90 electric Volvos.

Inside, Volvo says the new XC70 offers excellent versatility and space for every kind of journey, long or short. No images of the interior have been released, but Volvo always has exceptional cabins, with comfortable seats for all-day travel, simple controls, and high-quality fittings throughout.

A Versatile Family Hauler

Like the original XC70, the new XC70 is a versatile family car, ready for all kinds of adventures, whether taking the family shopping or outdoor trekking. The new XC70 should build on this legacy in a size and format that’s slightly larger and roomier than the current XC60.

While Volvo says that the XC70 will launch in China first, we think its size, design, and cabin space will appeal to North American tastes as well. Plus, its long-range plug-in capability will help customers who are nervous about making the switch to full electric but are ready to take a huge step towards zero-emissions driving.
