Both firms conduct crash testing and evaluate vehicle safety features. The NHTSA provides a Five-Star rating system, while the IIHS uses a “Good,” “Acceptable,” “Marginal,” or “Poor” scale to measure how well vehicles perform in tests.

How IIHS and NHTSA Test EVs

NHTSA ratings are based on a number of crash tests including frontal, side barrier, side pole, and rollover tests. It is interested in crashworthiness and crash avoidance features such as automated emergency braking.

The IIHS puts vehicles through six crash tests including a small overlap front test and evaluation of roof strength and head restraints. It presents a “Top Safety Pick” award to vehicles that perform the best.
