Flexible Platform Offers EV and Hybrid Options
Lexus (and its parent company Toyota) was early to the table with a range of hybrid models but has been slow to offer all-electric vehicles. However, things are changing quickly for the automaker. The latest version of its ES luxury sedan, recently unveiled at the Shanghai auto show, will be available globally in either a hybrid or an EV form. It will also roll out with front- or all-wheel drive.
Since its introduction in 1989, the car has been a mainstay of the Lexus lineup, a midsize, almost full-size luxury car prioritizing comfortable cruising, efficiency, and ride quality. As such, it has become a favorite of many who drive long distances, including airline limousine fleets who appreciate the ES for it’s excellent reliability and low running costs. The latest version of the ES should make for an even more attractive proposition.
Following a similar strategy to BMW, which offers a number of vehicles in both electric and gasoline forms on the same platform (the i7/7 Series, i5/5 Series, and i4/4 Series are examples), the ES uses one platform to offer two very different drivetrain options.
2026 Lexus ES350h
In North America, the hybrid-powered ES350h is likely to be the biggest seller. It features the Lexus sixth-generation hybrid system, which incorporates a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and an “eAxle” that combines the power control unit, transaxle, and electric motor. Lexus says not only does this packaging contribute to a more compact and lightweight powertrain with higher battery output but also helps reduce vibration and harshness. This combination makes for a quieter and more refined ride.
New for the latest-generation ES hybrid is all-wheel drive, which should make the vehicle a more attractive proposition for drivers in colder climates and areas that frequently get harsh winter weather.
All-Electric Lexus ES350e and ES500e
The all-electric versions of the new ES also offer a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The ES350e has one electric motor driving the front wheels. As of this writing, Lexus is light on details but claims that it will have an estimated range of 300 miles when equipped with 19-inch wheels.
The ES500e, on the other hand, offers the Lexus Direct4 all-wheel drive system, which can continuously adjust torque distribution between the front and rear axles, and even from side to side based on road conditions and driving inputs. The use of electric motors instead of conventional differentials and gearboxes means that up to 100 percent of the vehicle’s power can be sent to either the front or rear axle.
All-wheel drive also provides improved acceleration from a standstill, and greater handling stability. Two motors double the regeneration ability, enhancing the efficiency of the “large capacity” battery fitted underneath the floor of the new ES.
Clean, High-Tech Design
The new ES introduces a new design concept for Lexus, which is supposed to fuse clean technology and elegance. As such, it is bolder, with sharper and simpler lines than we’ve come to expect from Lexus. In profile, it’s taller than previous ES models to make room for the under-floor battery, and the passenger cabin and side glass have been extended to create a flowing, trunkless profile and a sharp taper towards the rear.
Up front, the nose of the ES incorporates a sharp new spindle shape extending from the hood to the bumpers which is cleaner and less fussy than previous Lexus models. Hybrid models still have a grille, while electric models have a more graphical, body-colored face. New “L signature’ daytime running lights give it a distinctive nighttime signature from both front and rear, and there are illuminated Lexus logos as well.

Lexus ES Interior
Inside the new ES, drivers and passengers will find more room than ever before. The wheelbase has been extended by three inches to improve cabin space, while overall length has been extended by half a foot. The seats are higher to make getting in and out easier, and there’s more glass to provide a wider field of vision.
As you might expect of a premium sedan, the materials are suitably high-end, with exceptional build quality. New trim options include 3D-printed layered bamboo trim highlighted by thematic ambient lighting. The overall atmosphere is very clean and elegant.
Digital technology takes center stage with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system that has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the ability to connect to two Bluetooth phones simultaneously. The new multimedia interface includes a built-in voice assistant that promises quicker responses to commands. There’s also a Mark Levinson audio system for concert-hall audio quality.
For the first time in North America, buyers can choose an “executive package” which offers an even more spacious and relaxing rear cabin. Available only on the ES350e electric front-wheel drive model, the package includes reclining rear seats with a passenger-side ottoman, rear massaging seats and rear seat heating and ventilation.
All new ES models will feature the latest version of Lexus’ active-safety suite, called Lexus Safety System+ 4.0. The first implementation of version 4.0, the ES updates its hardware and detection capabilities.
