How Volkswagen Is Using Swarm Data to Improve Safety
Ask today’s drivers what they want in a car and they will all tell you the same thing: they want their vehicle to be safe, reliable and fuel efficient among all else. To that end, Volkswagen Group is launching a major initiative across Europe to enhance vehicle safety by utilizing anonymized, real-world swarm data from customer vehicles.
By analyzing specific, complex traffic scenarios—such as intersections and parking lots—sensor and image data will improve driver assistance systems (ADAS) via over-the-air updates, prioritizing safety for occupants and vulnerable road users. Is that cool, or what?
The Keys to Data-Driven Safety
- Real-World Data Utilization: Instead of relying solely on simulations, engineers will use data from actual driving situations including emergency braking and evasive maneuvers to optimize assistance functions.
- Focus on Vulnerable Road Users: The system is designed to better detect and react to cyclists and pedestrians, such as children near school intersections, by allowing vehicles to proactively prepare braking.
- Rollout and Privacy: Starting with Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Audi, the program will expand to other brands including, Škoda and Porsche. Customer consent is required for data transmission, which adheres to European data protection regulations.
- Benefits to Customers: Improved algorithms for lane guidance, hazard detection, and automated driving functions are delivered to vehicles via software updates.
This initiative builds on Volkswagen's existing use of swarm data for high-resolution mapping and enhances overall traffic safety through continuous, data-driven optimization.
The Volkswagen Group is committed to further enhancing safety for all road users across Europe. Building on successful experiences in Germany, the Group aims to expand its program for utilizing sensor and image data from customer vehicles to around 40 European countries.
