All V6, Now with Hybrid Option

The Lexus LX sits at the top of the automaker’s luxury SUV lineup, combining high-end comfort and standout styling with serious off-road capability (something not all rivals prioritize). For 2025, a more powerful hybrid powertrain and a new off-road-focused Overtrail trim join the range, further solidifying the LX as one of the most capable SUVs in its segment.

Every LX is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 hooked to a 10-speed automatic transmission with full-time four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case. In nonhybrid LX 600 form, the powertrain is rated at 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

New for 2025 is the LX 700h hybrid, which borrows its system from the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia. Here, an electric motor sits between the gas engine and transmission, drawing power from a nickel-metal hydride battery mounted under the cargo floor. Total system output is 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.

Notably, unlike other Toyota hybrids, the LX's hybrid system uses a traditional starter and alternator. This change was made intentionally: if the hybrid system fails while off-road in a remote area, the vehicle can still function and drive back to civilization. This is an important detail, as the Overtrail model is only available with the hybrid powertrain.

EV Matchmaker: Find Your Best Fit

According to Lexus, the nonhybrid 600 sprints to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, and that time drops to 6.4 seconds in the more powerful 700h. However, the hybrid powertrain doesn’t feel that quick in day-to-day driving, likely due to the LX’s sheer weight (it tips the scale at well over three tons). The 10-speed automatic transmission never gets lost in those gears and has one of the best 1-2 and 2-3 shifts in the 10-speed game. The steering is heavier than that of other Lexus crossovers, but no one will consider it hefty.

The LX rides on adaptive hydraulic suspension that can raise the ride height a few inches beyond its standard 8 inches of ground clearance. Every LX features a center locking differential, while F Sport Handling trims add a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. The Overtrail trim goes further with front and rear locking differentials, giving it three lockers and serious off-road capability.

Wrapping an Off-Road SUV in Lexus Trimmings

Like all Lexus models, the LX features the brand’s signature “spindle” front grille. Here, it looks oversized and doesn’t translate as well as it does on the LC sports car. The LX’s taillights won’t grab the eyes like the rear end of the RX crossover SUV, either.

But the Overtrail stands out, with 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapping 18-inch alloy wheels. Though most owners will never see them, thick metal skid plates protect the underside of the Overtrail from the front bumper to the rear of the transmission. This is not the Lexus most people think of when they consider the automaker; it looks like someone modified it from the factory.

Inside, the Overtrail's cabin doesn't stray too far from the standard LX formula. Every model boasts an interior full of digital displays, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen atop the dashboard, a 7-inch touchscreen below it for climate control and off-road info, and a 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital gauge cluster. The digital experience is disjointed, though, as if each screen were designed by separate teams that never spoke to one another. Thankfully, nearly all essential climate control functions retain actual buttons. There's also a volume knob, and every off-road piece of hardware is engaged via buttons and toggles rather than a touchscreen.

Every LX comes standard with advanced safety technology, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitors, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display. However, at over six figures, the LX lacks any hands-free driver-assist system, something other vehicles in the segment offer.

LX Space and Comfort

The LX offers seating for four to seven, depending on trim. The Overtrail can be configured as a two-row, five-seater or a three-row, seven-seater model. The third row is tight, however, and best suited for short rides only.

Cargo space is limited, too. Behind the available third row, there’s just 7.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Without it, there’s 30.9 cubic feet of space, and folding everything gives you over 62 cubic feet of storage.

The front seats are now more cocoon-like than the overstuffed thrones found in older models. The seat bottoms are sculpted with plenty of support, but they don't feel as wide or plush as before. Second-row occupants will feel as if they are sitting up high due to the body-on-frame design of the LX. There’s plenty of leg, toe, and headroom for six-foot adults to be comfortable. The entire package inside (and out) is smaller and less people-friendly than the Navigator and Escalade, but its smaller dimensions make it easier to park than those behemoths at Costco.

LX 700h Fuel Economy and Pricing

The hybrid 700h checks in with EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 22 highway, and 20 combined. That improvement is only 2 mpg city and 1 mpg combined over the nonhybrid, with the highway rating carrying over. In reality, both the LX 600 and LX 700h will average about 20 mpg on the highway during a road trip. That’s a notable improvement over the outgoing model’s V8, which would barely make it into the high teens. But the LX 700h only has a 17.9-gallon fuel tank, limiting total range. Prepare for frequent fuel stops.

The 2025 Lexus LX 700h is on sale now. Prices start at $115,350, including a $1,350 destination charge.
