The 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid won't fix your commute, but a smooth ride, solid driver-assist features, and great fuel economy will make it a whole lot easier.

Commuting ain’t easy these days. Gas prices are climbing, more offices are calling people back in, and traffic, well, it’s a nightmare. All-electric vehicles can take some of the pain away at the pump, but EVs don’t fit everyone’s lifestyle. Thank goodness for hybrids. In particular, the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid. This little compact crossover offers excellent fuel economy, a stylish interior, and plenty of features, all at a decent price.

What’s New for 2026

The Sportage got a heavy refresh for 2026 that includes new sporty S and brawny-looking X-Line trims for the hybrid, and now every all-wheel drive trim gets a Terrain mode. Kia also revised the front and rear bumpers and gave the LED lighting a design makeover. The company also improved many of its advanced driver-assist features, adding a lane-change assist, as well as a 10-inch head-up display and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the larger screen. Looking Good, Kia

Inside, drivers are treated to cushy, heated and ventilated front seats on the top SX-Prestige trim, with super-soft headrests. Seriously, I don’t know what makes these headrests so soft, but if you need to close your eyes in the school pickup line for a few seconds, you’ll be plenty relaxed.  

The available heated squoval steering wheel gives the interior a quirky look, as do the offset buttons on the center console. There is a fair amount of wasted space on the console that could be more useful as small-item storage, but I can’t deny the ingenious cup holder design. They are big enough for an oversized water bottle, but press a button and a spring-loaded curved wall pops out so regular-sized sodas don't slosh around.

There is plenty of room for people and things, though. The rear seat, with outboard heating on this trim, has more legroom than heavy hitters like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 hybrids, and behind the rear seats, there is 39.5 cubic feet of space, expanding to nearly 74 cubes with the rear seats folded. That bests the Toyota on both fronts, but the Honda ekes out a win on overall cargo space by a few cubic feet.

Smooth and Easy

As nice as it is to look at, the driving experience is even better. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine combined with a 44.7-kilowatt electric motor produces 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. The base LX trim is front-wheel drive, but all other trims, S, EX, X-Line, and SX-Prestige, get all-wheel drive.

I love the power delivery here. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the hybrid system zips up to speed quickly and smoothly. The Sportage uses all-electric propulsion at slower speeds, and there are no herky-jerky movements when the gas engine joins the party. There is a Sport mode and paddle shifters if you want to get your inner enthusiast on, but the soft suspension and light steering are meant more for everyday driving. Kia does offer a Terrain mode with options for Snow, Mud, and Sand, but with the Hankook Dynapro HP2 tires, I figured it was better to stay on the pavement.

Highway driving is made easier with the available Blind-Spot View Monitor. Activate the turn signal and you’ll get a video feed from the car’s blind spot. I found this to be incredibly useful at night when it’s tough to gauge exactly where others’ headlights are. This feature is only available on the top SX-Prestige trim, but I think it’s worth the money.  

Also on the docket here is Kia’s latest version of Highway Driving Assist. This hands-on system takes over steering, acceleration, and brakes, and I generally like it, although I feel like the lane-centering favors the driver's side, pushing the passenger side a bit closer to the lane marker than I’d prefer. A new lane-change feature is pretty cool, engaging quickly after I signaled.

Keep in mind that Kia doesn’t offer a standard suite of driver-assist features across all trims. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go, forward-collision avoidance, high-beam assist, lane-keeping and lane-following assist, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking distance warning are standard across the board, but you have to jump up to the S trim to get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe-exit warning. Things like Remote Smart Parking assist, a 360-degree camera, and the aforementioned Highway Drive Assist and Blind-Spot View Monitor are only available on the top trim.

During my 350 miles with the Sportage, I averaged 34.7 miles per gallon, pretty much right on track with the EPA’s estimation of 35 mpg combined. If you want the best fuel economy, you’ll have to eschew the heated seats, the Blind-Spot View Monitor, and other niceties and go for the front-wheel drive base LX trim. There you’ll get an EPA-estimated 41 mpg city, 44 mpg highway, and 42 mpg combined. It’s a shame Kia doesn’t offer the upper trims in front-wheel drive, especially for the buyers in warm-weather states who don’t necessarily need all-wheel drive but want to save at the pump.

Sorry, Technical Difficulties

For 2026, all trims get a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a matching digital gauge cluster. Kia has been rolling out wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability for the larger screen, and while it hasn’t been a problem in other models I’ve driven, I never got it to connect wirelessly in the Sportage. Then, the wired connection stopped working halfway through my loan. The native navigation is great, but it was a bummer not being able to safely catch up on text messages or scroll through Spotify and podcasts on the screen.

There are physical buttons, sort of, for the HVAC controls. The Sportage has a row of capacitive-touch buttons that do double duty as climate controls and screen controls. It’s a great way to save space, but it took me a while to figure out where the volume control was hidden — it shares a knob with the driver’s side temperature. The good news is you can always just use the roller on the steering wheel. Much easier.

Barrel Bottom Pricing

Kia undercuts the competition by at least a few thousand dollars at both ends of the trim lineup. The Honda CR-V hybrid offers front-wheel drive on more than just the base model, so you can get an EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined and still have heated seats. The same goes for the Toyota RAV4 hybrid, but here, the front-wheel drive trims return 43 mpg combined.  

Still, it’s tough to beat the 2026 Kia Sportage hybrid. Apple CarPlay snafus notwithstanding, the little crossover boasts easy-to-use tech, useful driver-assistance features, and a smooth and easy powertrain, all at a price lower than the competition. This one should definitely be on your test-drive list.
