Genesis Is Done Playing It Safe

It's shaping up to be a big year for Genesis. What began in 2008 as a nameplate for a sedan and coupe within Hyundai's lineup has evolved into its own distinct luxury brand. Since spinning off in 2015 as the premium arm of Hyundai Motor Group, Genesis' lineup has grown to seven models. This year, it's pushing beyond traditional luxury into new territory with the launch of its Magma performance sub-brand and the debut of Genesis Magma Racing in the World Endurance Championship.

The first Magma performance model to launch is the all-electric GV60 Magma, arriving in the U.S. later this summer. Here's what we know so far.

The GV60, Reengineered

The GV60 is the brand's first purpose-built EV, and it shares an underlying architecture, including an 84.0-kWh battery pack, electronic architecture, and some motors, with the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

But just as the Hyundai and Kia look different from each other, the GV60 has a unique design that sets it apart. Its rounded, almost hatchback-like proportions are paired with Genesis' signature split horizontal lighting. It rides on the same 114.2-inch wheelbase as the EV6 but measures 178.9 inches long, nearly 6 inches shorter, with shorter overhangs that give it a sportier stance.

For shoppers still learning the ownership basics, this first EV shopping guide breaks down what to watch before making the jump ➜

The Magma variant leans into this athleticism. Wider fenders - stretched by 2 inches - enclose 21-inch forged alloy wheels and 275-mm tires, while the ride height drops by 0.8 inch. Up front, a more aggressive fascia adds three cooling slots above the grille and small dive planes at the corners for added downforce. Extended rocker panels visually connect those wider fenders.

At the rear, faux vents at the corners and a large wing with upturned end-plates replace the standard model's modest spoiler. The revised nose and tail add about three inches to the overall length compared to the standard GV60. So far, Genesis has only shown the Magma in a vivid orange inspired by molten lava, a nod to the sub-brand's name.

Inside the Magma Cabin

Inside, the GV60's cabin is already much more premium than its corporate cousins, and the Magma goes even further. A 27-inch OLED display integrates the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system, and a secondary control knob provides quick access alongside the standard touchscreen.

One of the Magma's most unique features is its shift dial. When the car's off, it looks like a large crystal sphere. Start the vehicle, and it rotates 180 degrees to reveal the drive selector dial beneath.

Where standard GV60s offer interior color choices of black, white, green and blue, the Magma goes with an all-black theme, ditching the metallic trim bits for blacked-out finishes and adding orange contrast stitching on the doors, dash, and seats, plus orange seatbelts. The front seats are more heavily bolstered than in the standard GV60 to keep the driver and front passenger securely in place during spirited driving.

Cargo space will likely check in at 24 cubic feet behind the rear seats, growing to 54.7 cubic feet with those seats folded, the same as the standard GV60.

The Magma Performance Difference

The Magma's branding is all about performance. Standard GV60s range from 225 horsepower in rear-wheel drive to 429 horsepower in all-wheel drive, but the Magma borrows its powertrain from the Ioniq 5 N, which bumps output to 641 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Genesis says that's enough to propel it to 60 mph in under 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 164 mph. Upgraded motors feature improved rotor control and better cooling.

The Boost button on the steering wheel is retained from the GV60 Performance, but its duration increases from 10 to 15 seconds, offering longer bursts of maximum output.

Genesis has also revised the suspension geometry in the Magma. The front roll center has been lowered by 80.7 mm and the rear by 89.5 mm for better mechanical grip from the tires. The front tires' vertical load has increased 10 percent, and the rears have gone up by 18 percent. New electronically controlled dampers, increased caster trail, and longer control arms enhance the overall steering feel and improve straight-line stability.

Genesis has also made the twisting rigidity of the body 9.7% stiffer, adding more brackets in the rear, more than 2 feet of extra structural adhesive, and 20 new weld points to better control body movement.

A rear electronic limited-slip differential works alongside the brakes to provide torque vectoring for more balance and predictability. The Magma also gets a Drift mode, enabling natural, sustained oversteer when on the track. With more acceleration capability, the brakes need an upgrade too: 400-mm front rotors with mono-block calipers for predictable and sustained stopping performance.

Finally, to maximize the GV60 Magma's fun factor, it has a virtual gear shift system that replicates the feel and sound of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Drivers can choose from multiple audio profiles, including one that mimics a traditional combustion engine, delivering the same auditory and tactile feedback without the emissions.

The GV60 Magma goes on sale in the second half of 2026, and pricing will be announced closer to the delivery date. Stay tuned.
