why we do it

It’s the Simple Things

It’s the simple things that add up over time. Ditch the plastic straw and start using reusable water bottles. Turn off the lights when not at home or when leaving a room. Limit the use of one-time-use plastics and get in a routine of using reusable shopping bags. Making these small changes can have a huge environmental impact in the long run.

Driving Change and Planting Trees

Electric cars are reshaping the way people drive. They’re cheaper to refuel, recharge and maintain – but that’s not all. Depending on the electric car, you could eliminate tailpipe emissions altogether. That’s why we want you to try one for yourself!

GreenCars and Lithia Motors have teamed up with The Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees for test drives taken in electric cars at participating dealerships.

How It Works

Take a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or all-electric vehicle for a spin and we’ll plant one tree for every test drive completed at participating dealerships between April 22nd and May 5th.

History of Earth Day

Every year on April 22nd we celebrate Earth Day – the birth of the modern environmental movement that started in 1970.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was inspired by the protests of the 1960s, is the brainchild behind Earth Day that began as a national teach-in on the environment.

This coming April 22nd marks the 51st Anniversary of Earth Day and is the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by over a billion people every year. It represents a day of action to change human behavior to create global, national and local policy changes for a cleaner environment for all.

About the Arbor Day Foundation

Nebraska newspaper editor J. Sterling Morton loved trees. Once he became secretary of the Nebraska Territory, he spread the message of the value of trees by starting Arbor Day. On April 10th, 1872 prizes were offered for the most trees planted and over one million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day.

Other states passed legislation to observe Arbor day and today, this day of tree planting is celebrated in all 50 states. The Arbor Day Foundation represents hope for the future, planting trees for a better tomorrow.
