Volvo’s Missing EV Piece Falls Into Place

When it comes to EVs, Volvo has you covered if you're shopping for something compact (the EX30), subcompact (EX40), or need three rows for the whole crew (the EX90). The midsize category, though, has been lacking, a void Volvo's finally filling with the all-new EX60.

Though it very much fits into the template set by the existing XC60 and bearing more than a casual resemblance to the ES90, the EX60 has a completely new platform with three new battery pack options and power output ranging from 369 horsepower all the way up to 670. Yes, there'll be a Cross Country flavor too, making this an EV that could fit into a lot of people's lifestyles.

Familiar Looks for the EX60

Volvo isn't exactly known for making the biggest splash with its products' exterior design. Each of its models is a masterful example of Scandinavian minimalism, and the new EX60 continues this tradition.

It shares the same basic styling language as the EX90, which is itself not far off from the company's internal-combustion-powered SUVs like the XC60 and XC90. The EX60, though, has a subtly more aggressive look.

If you’re comparing where the EX60 fits in today’s growing electric SUV landscape, the GreenCars Buyer’s Guide offers a quick way to stack range, size, and pricing across segments ➜

The nose has more taper to it, which gives the front fenders a subtly pronounced effect. Those iconic Thor's Hammer headlights are still there and look more rakish than ever. From the side, the EX60 has this longer, almost wagon-like profile that reminds me of the company's now mostly departed V series machines. The taillights out back are relatively small for a Volvo, but they're still vertically stacked with the upper portion inset to match the roof's taper.

Overall, it's a modern, classy-looking SUV, and a slippery one at that, with a 0.26 coefficient of drag.

The Cabin

Inside, the EX60 shares a lot of the same language and themes established by the smaller EX30, which makes for a pared-down experience that's focused on the central touchscreen. It's a 15-inch OLED, to be specific, which, interestingly, is oriented landscape style here, rather than the vertical portrait orientation Volvo has been using for some time now. It's paired with a wide gauge cluster situated far back on the low dashboard.

Tactile controls are definitely at a premium here, but Volvo did at least maintain a vertical roller for volume control situated beneath the touchscreen. That's flanked by a pair of buttons for skipping forward and backward in whatever playlist you're pumping through the 21-speaker Bose sound system. Those who pay a bit more can step up to a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos support.

The EX60 seats five in an interior that's well-appointed in tasteful materials and offers plenty of storage cubbies situated throughout. Behind the second row, you'll get 20.4 cubic feet of storage space, expanding to 58.2 cubic feet with the seats folded down. There's also a frunk up front with 3 cubic feet of storage, enough for charging cables or maybe a few groceries.

A New Platform

Beneath all that is a wholly new platform that Volvo calls SPA3. SPA3 introduces a raft of new technologies, with the hallmark being a gigacast core. Gigacasting is the process of using high-pressure casting techniques to create larger, more complex shapes in a single step. This means quicker, easier assembly and lighter-weight vehicles.

That chassis is formed around a wholly new, simplified battery pack, with much greater density than before. Volvo CTO Anders Bell summed up the new battery quite simply: "Less parts, less structure, less weight, more stiffness." Bell said the pack is easier to repair since the electronics are tucked in an easy-to-access position beneath the rear seat.

Bell also said that the car's revised architecture has substantially simplified the entire car, saving weight and creating more volume internally: "You reduce miles of wiring, liters, and gallons of ECU packaging, and that really helps make a much better car."

This increase in efficiency has another benefit: environmental impact. Volvo says the EX60 has the smallest carbon footprint of any EV the brand has ever produced.

Volvo's offering the EX60 with three different battery packs. The smallest, called the P6, offers 80-kilowatt-hours and a manufacturer-estimated 310 miles of range. Step up to the P10 for 91 kWh and around 320 miles on a charge, while the highest-performance P12 covers up to 400 miles from a 112-kWh battery pack.

Power output increases as you move through the lineup. The P6 is a single-motor, rear-drive unit with 369 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The P10 adds a second motor for all-wheel drive, with power increasing to 503 horsepower and 524 lb-ft. Finally, the P12 delivers a whopping 670 horsepower and 583 lb-ft through all four wheels.

Pricing and Availability

Orders for the EX60 start immediately in Europe, with books opening in the U.S. sometime in the spring. The Cross Country edition, with adaptive suspension and an extra 20 mm of ground clearance, will arrive sometime later. Volvo hasn't issued pricing yet but said to expect a well-equipped EX60 P10 Plus to start around $60,000 MSRP. This should put it right in line with BMW's pricing for its upcoming electric iX3 SUV.

We'll have to see how the EX60 drives, of course, but on paper, Volvo's latest midsize SUV looks ready to compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and do it with that trademark subtle style.
