Fast Facts:
- Hubless Wheel: Verge electric motorcycles feature a hubless rear wheel design with the motor integrated into the swingarm.
- Performance: Some models offer over 200 horsepower, and zero to 60 mph happens in just 3.5 seconds.
- Range and Charging: With new solid state battery technology, the TS Pro will take you 370 miles on a charge and can add 186 miles in just 10 minutes of charging.
Verge Skips the Concept Phase and Goes Straight to Production
The automotive world has been racing toward producing electric cars with solid state batteries. Greencars has run many articles about various innovations for car companies, pushing toward including solid state battery packs in their vehicle by the end of this decade. But a small motorcycle company from Finland may beat them all to the starting line.
Verge Motorcycles makes meaty electric bikes that include massive rear tires that sit in a hubless wheel. That means you can see straight through the rear wheel, kind of like a donut. This was first seen in custom motorcycle builder Billy Lane’s amazing Psycho Billy Cadillac chopper that was featured in Easyriders magazine back in 2002, winning him Builder of the Year.
Instead of having a small axle, bearings and a hub on a spoked wheel, Billy’s hubless wheel has a much larger hub and wheel that are almost the same diameter. The Verge hubless wheel integrates the electric motor directly into the wheel rim, creating a “donut motor” where electromagnets in a stationary central hub interact with magnets in a rotating wheel, eliminating the need for chains, sprockets, and traditional hubs.
The original Verge e-motorcycles used conventional lithium-ion batteries but recently announced it will transition to new solid state donut batteries. Developed with its partner company Donut Lab, the new solid state-powered bikes are poised to be on the market by the end of 2026.
Solid state batteries are ready to change the EV world by replacing the liquid electrolytes found in traditional lithium-ion batteries with a solid material that offers higher energy density, faster charging, and zero risk of thermal runaway.
Unlike automakers who are slowly developing solid state batteries for future EVs, Verge is skipping the concept phase and going straight to production. According to Verge, the solid state TS Pro e-motorcycle will have a range of 370 miles on a single charge, can add an additional 186 miles of range in just ten minutes of charging, provides 200 horsepower and can take you from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
The new donut motor will be 50 percent lighter than the earlier model bike while maintaining the same output. The company also tells us that its solid state batteries will allow the bike to operate in extreme temperatures.
Ville Piippo, the CTO of Donut Lab says that Verge is ready to launch the new solid state e-bike now, not by the end of the decade stating, “We are now ready to bring truly exceptional technology to the electric mobility market. Our battery technology can be used in all types of vehicles, from motorcycles and passenger cars, to trucks, robotics, and stationary energy storage.”
The Price of Freedom
Verge electric motorcycles currently come in three models. Its base model has an MSRP of $26,900 while the TS Pro comes in at $29,900. The TS Ultra starts at $44,900.
